Montepulciano is one of the most beautiful towns of the Italian Renaissance. Hence its name: "the pearl of the XVI century". Great artists and architects of the time like Antonio da Sangallo The Old, have contributed, with their works, to the elegance and richness of the town. Their mastery can still be admired in the beautiful palaces of the historical centre. Among the most famous sights are "the cathedral of San Biagio", the main square “piazza Grande”, il Duomo (the cathedral), the wine cellars, the magnificent Renaissance and Baroque churches jutting out along the main streets of the town. Montepulciano is also popular for the many cultural activities which take place in the town, the most famous one is the International Music Festival: "il Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte", which is held every year between the end of July and the beginning of August and offers many different plays and concerts of classical music. Also renowned is the “Bravio delle Botti”, a typical popular festival which is held on the last Sunday of August, and the “Bruscello”, a theatre representation played by amateur actors from Montepulciano. Montepulciano is also known for its spas which are situated at a few kilometres from the historical centre in the small village of Sant’Albino.
